Flashcards
3.1 Steel
Cards in this deck (9)
- 1steelalloy of iron and carbon
the most widely used engeneering material - 2carbon steelconsist of iron and carbon.
carbon steels can be divided into three main grades:
-mild steel (most widelyy used grade)
-medium carbon steel
-high carbon steel - 3alloy steelsconcist of iron, carbon and one more alloying metals.
-low alloy steel
-high strengh low alloy steel
-stainless steels
-tool steel - 4low alloy steels90% or more iron+alloying metall(chronium,nickl,manganese,molybdenum,vanadium)
- 5high strengh low alloy steel: (HSLA) <2% alloying metals
- 6stainless steel: contain chroniumas well as other metals- such as nickel- and which do not rust
- 7tool steel: extremely hard, and are used in cutting tools. contain tungsten/cobalt
->high speed steels:
used in cutting tools that operate at high temperatures, such as drill bits - 8corrosionweakness of mild steel -it corrodes
-its surface progressively deteriorates due to a chemical reaction.-
-this reaction takes place between the iron (in steel) and the oxygen (air)
->to form iron oxide
-iron corrodes-it rusts - 9problem of corrosion-in some metals (aluminium) the presence of corrosion is not a problem, as the layer of oxide around the metal remains hard, which prevents it from oxidizing any further. however when mild steel goes rusty, the rust on the surface comnes off continuously, and a new rusty layer forms, progressively 'eating into' the metal
