Ancient Greece, the cradle of Western civilization, developed from the Bronze Age, with civilizations such as the Minoan and Mycenaean, to the classical era, characterized by Athenian democracy and the Persian Wars. After the conquest of Persia by Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC, his empire expanded to India, but after his death in 323 BC, it disintegrated, marking the end of the classical era and giving way to the Hellenistic period. The Hellenistic period was characterized by the spread of Greek culture throughout the eastern Mediterranean, with the founding of Hellenistic cities and the fusion of cultures. Roman expansion to the east led to the gradual decline of the Hellenistic kingdoms, culminating in Rome's annexation of Egypt in 30 BC, marking the end of the Hellenistic period.
