  1. 1[blank_start]Interviews[blank_end] are a type of [blank_start]self[blank_end]-[blank_start]report[blank_end] method that involve the client reporting [blank_start]thoughts[blank_end] and [blank_start]feelings[blank_end] [blank_start]verbally[blank_end]. They are non [blank_start]experimental[blank_end], so there is no [blank_start]IV[blank_end] or [blank_start]DV[blank_end]. Interviews can be used [blank_start]alone[blank_end] as a [blank_start]method[blank_end], or as [blank_start]part[blank_end] of another type of [blank_start]research[blank_end] [blank_start]method[blank_end] (as a [blank_start]technique[blank_end]).

  2. 2STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS
    [blank_start]Structured[blank_end] [blank_start]interviews[blank_end] involve a [blank_start]standard[blank_end] set of [blank_start]closed[blank_end] questions with a few [blank_start]possible[blank_end] answers. [blank_start]Identical[blank_end] [blank_start]questions[blank_end] are asked of each [blank_start]participant[blank_end] and they produce [blank_start]quantitative[blank_end] data. [blank_start]Interviewer[blank_end] needs no special [blank_start]training[blank_end].

    SEMI-STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS
[blank_start]Semi[blank_end]-[blank_start]structured[blank_end] interviews involve a [blank_start]flexible[blank_end] set of [blank_start]questions[blank_end] so researchers can ask the [blank_start]interviewee[blank_end] to [blank_start]develop[blank_end] their answers. The questions are [blank_start]open[blank_end] [blank_start]ended[blank_end] but they still get certain [blank_start]information[blank_end], allowing the researcher to gain new [blank_start]information[blank_end] on the [blank_start]topic[blank_end]. These types of [blank_start]interviews[blank_end] produce [blank_start]qualitative[blank_end] data, which means the [blank_start]responses[blank_end] have to be [blank_start]coded[blank_end] into [blank_start]categories[blank_end]. Furthermore, the [blank_start]interviewer[blank_end] needs special [blank_start]training[blank_end] to be able to [blank_start]conduct[blank_end] a semi-structured [blank_start]interview[blank_end].

+ Require [blank_start]less[blank_end] [blank_start]interview[blank_end] [blank_start]skill[blank_end] so can be carried out by [blank_start]interviewers[blank_end] with less [blank_start]training[blank_end].
+ They are [blank_start]easier[blank_end] to [blank_start]analyse[blank_end] because the answers are [blank_start]pre[blank_end]-[blank_start]determined[blank_end]. Also, they produce [blank_start]quantitative[blank_end] data which can be [blank_start]collected[blank_end] and [blank_start]statistically[blank_end] [blank_start]analysed[blank_end].
+ They can be easily [blank_start]repeated[blank_end] because of the [blank_start]standardised[blank_end] [blank_start]questions[blank_end].

    - The [blank_start]answers[blank_end] could be [blank_start]restricted[blank_end] by the questions asked, which could result in [blank_start]meaningless[blank_end] [blank_start]data[blank_end].

    + In-[blank_start]depth[blank_end] [blank_start]qualitative[blank_end] data can be [blank_start]collected[blank_end]

  5. 5INTERVIEWS EVALUATION OVERALL
+ One [blank_start]strength[blank_end] of [blank_start]interviews[blank_end] is that they allow [blank_start]participants[blank_end] to [blank_start]describe[blank_end] their own [blank_start]experiences[blank_end]. This means researchers have [blank_start]access[blank_end] to what the interviewee's [blank_start]feel[blank_end], think and [blank_start]experience[blank_end]. It is [blank_start]easier[blank_end] for participants to [blank_start]reveal[blank_end] [blank_start]behaviour[blank_end] from [blank_start]real[blank_end] [blank_start]situations[blank_end] as they can use their own [blank_start]words[blank_end] and take all the [blank_start]time[blank_end] they need. Therefore, interviews allow [blank_start]psychologists[blank_end] to collect [blank_start]detailed[blank_end] [blank_start]qualitative[blank_end] data.

    - However, a [blank_start]weakness[blank_end] of [blank_start]interviews[blank_end] is that participants may not always tell the [blank_start]truth[blank_end], perhaps due to [blank_start]social[blank_end] [blank_start]desirability[blank_end] [blank_start]bias[blank_end]. For example, if asked 'Have you ever [blank_start]stolen[blank_end] anything?' [blank_start]interviewees[blank_end] may say they haven't because they don't want to be [blank_start]judged[blank_end] or seen as a 'bad' [blank_start]person[blank_end]. Also, some people find it [blank_start]difficult[blank_end] to [blank_start]verbalise[blank_end] their [blank_start]emotions[blank_end] or thoughts, which could cause the [blank_start]answers[blank_end] to [blank_start]lack[blank_end] meaning and [blank_start]validity[blank_end].

+ Another [blank_start]strength[blank_end] of [blank_start]interviews[blank_end] is that they can be used to study large [blank_start]samples[blank_end] of [blank_start]people[blank_end]. For example, researchers can conduct '[blank_start]group[blank_end] [blank_start]interviews[blank_end]' that involve approximately a [blank_start]dozen[blank_end] people being [blank_start]interviewed[blank_end] [blank_start]together[blank_end]. For some participants this is a more [blank_start]natural[blank_end] situation, as it feels like real [blank_start]life[blank_end], and they find it [blank_start]easier[blank_end] to share more [blank_start]information[blank_end] about themselves. This increases the [blank_start]validity[blank_end] of their [blank_start]answers[blank_end].

    - Another [blank_start]weakness[blank_end] of interviews is that it is [blank_start]easy[blank_end] for the interviewer to ask [blank_start]leading[blank_end] questions, whether [blank_start]accidently[blank_end] or [blank_start]deliberately[blank_end]. For example, 'Did you feel [blank_start]sad[blank_end] after the [blank_start]upsetting[blank_end] funeral?' is [blank_start]encouraging[blank_end] the interviewee to say [blank_start]yes[blank_end]. This would cause the [blank_start]participants[blank_end] answers to lack [blank_start]validity[blank_end]. This would also happen if the questions weren't [blank_start]clear[blank_end] to the [blank_start]participant[blank_end].
