  1. 1“Brave…Valiant…Worthy, Worthiest cousin”A list of positive adjectives. This is so the audience trust the positive view we are given of him.
  2. 2“Valour’s minion” “Unseame’d him…fixed his head upon our battlements” “Bellona’s Bridegroom”Simile used to suggest Macbeth is devoted to war.
Macbeth is praised for being brutal when he kills the enemy in the beginning, but at the end when he does it for his own ambition he is called a "butcher".
A metaphor for him being married to war, he is devoted to war like a husband is devoted to his wife. Could suggest he is a God of war and Bellona is Goddess of war.
  3. 3“So fair and foul a day I have not seen”First line from Macbeth, could foreshadow that he will meet the witches as he uses their words. Could suggest that the witches have already influenced Macbeth as
Macbeth is using a paradox like the witches do.
  4. 4“Is this a dagger which I see before me…or art thou but a dagger of the mind?”Macbeth is questioning his sanity. He is hallucinating the dagger. This could link to when Macbeth and Banquo first met the witches, Banquo said "have we eaten on the insane root". Both characters have thought they were hallucinating.
  5. 5“Glamis hath murder'd sleep, and therefore Cawdor Shall sleep no more; Macbeth shall sleep no more.”Macbeth fears he will suffer with insomnia due to guilt. Macbeth is talking in third person which could show his insanity. he may be trying to detach himself from the crime.
  6. 6“Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood Clean from my hand?”Hyperbole is used to suggest Macbeth will never be able to wash the blood away. The blood is a metaphor for the crime he has committed and his guilt.
  7. 7“O, full of scorpions is my mind, dear wife!”Metaphor for how the Witches, Lady Macbeth and his own ambition have Poisoned his mind. this can link to when Lady Macbeth says "ill pour my spirits in thine ear" she will give him the evil he needs.
