- 11Critical Perspective PSYCHOANALYTICAL PERSPECTIVESuggests that Prospero's journey is to reconcile both sides of his 'self' and to find acceptance in order to become complete.
In ACT 5 SCENE 1 Prospero accepts Caliban through "This thing of darkness, I acknowledge mine". This can be seen as him accepting his Id and becoming whole - he accepts his savage side rather than trying to oppress and deny it (Caliban) - 12Critical Perspective COLONIALISTInterprets the ambiguous representation of Caliban as evidence of Shakespeare's opposition to colonialist practices of his time and a critique of his society.
Caliban's use of poetry and poetic imagery, along with the contrast of him and the 'civilised Europeans' makes it appear as if Shakespeare is challenging the stereotypical views of his time.
