- 1What is evolution?Change through time
OR
Change in allele frequency through time - 2Who first published the concept of evolution by natural selection (2 people)? What years?Charles darwin
And
Alfred Wallace
In 1859 - 3What were Darwin’s initial observations?1) Variation exists within all species & variations are often passed on to offspring
2) Overproduction of offspring
3) Organisms are adapted to their environments
4) There is artificial selection - 4Evolution is a fact Evolution is a theoryHappened and is happening
Explanations about how & why change occurs - 5What are the basics of natural selection?Natural selection = differential survival (survival of the good enough)
There is a pattern to what species survive - 6How does variation appear in populations?a) sexual reproduction (mixing genes)
b) Mutations - 7What are mutations?Random damage or mistakes or errors in DNA
- 8Are most mutations beneficial, neutral, or harmful?Neutral.
Some are harmful
Beneficial are rare - 9What is the major evidence for evolution?-Molecular chemistry
-Genetics
-Atavisms
-Junk DNA - 10What is evidence does molecular chemistry show?Molecular chemistry = All life on earth is based on the same chemistry - DNA
- 11What is evidence do genetics show?Genetics = From bacteria to humans, the genes that code for many enzymes are identical.
-Also, all life forms are related. - 12What is evidence do Atavisms show?Atavisms = Evolutinatry throwbacks. Tendency for an organisms to have ancestrial features not normally seen in a species (chicken teeth, humans with tails, snakes with legs.)
- 13What is evidence does junk DNA show?Junk DNA = Non-coding nuclear DNA in the gneome of an organisms. (has no function or no known function) (ex. Humans ~25 Ka genes; 93% is junk)
