- 1Name the types of manual input.Keyboard
Mouse
Concept keyboards
Touch screens
Graphics Tablet
Speech Recognition - 2Describe a standard keyboard. Most common type of input device used with computers. Usually in the QWERTY format, although there are some variations like ergonomic keyboards.
- 3Describe a standard mouse. Most common pointing device used with computers, can be connected via a cable or wirelessly.
- 4Describe a concept keyboard.Commonly used in restaurants and supermarkets for quick data entry. Specific keys are programmed for full words e.g. Big Mac would be on one key. this method of input can also be used in primary schools where children with weak keyboarding skills can press images in educational programs.
- 5Describe a touch screen.Senses when an area of the screen has been touched. Usually used with a stylus or by using a finger. Touchscreens often use handwriting recognition for handwritten notes.
- 6Describe a graphics tablet.Graphics tablets are mainly used for drawing , it consists of a flat surface and a stylus which can be used to produce freehand drawings or trace around a more complicated image.
- 7Describe speech recognition.Microphones are use to input sound into a computer system and are often used for speech recognition. When the user speaks into the microphone, the sounds of the words are compared to a dictionary of sounds and converted into computer readable text.
- 8Name the types of automatic input.Bar code recognition
OMR
OCR
Magnetic strip recognition
MICR
Sensors - 9Describe bar code recognition.A bar code represents a code number for a product and is a set of vertical lines of different thickness that represent a number. the lines give information about: the country of manufacture, the name of the manufacturer and a product code. there is also a check digit on the end of the bar code which is used to make sure that the bar code is valid. Bar code readers or scanners are used to input data from bar codes.
- 10Describe OMR.OMR stands for Optical Mark Reader/Recognition. it uses a reader to detect marks made in certain places on specially printed forms. It is a very fast input method and is used where large amounts of data need to be input quickly.
- 11Describe OCR.OCR stands for Optical Character Reader/Recognition. This is where an ordinary scanner with special software converts text from a scanned image into a format that can be edited by word processing software. the text must be printed or written very clearly for it to be successfully input.
- 12Describe magnetic strip recognition.A magnetic strip is a thin band of magnetic tape that is often found on the back of a credit or debit card etc.
The magnetic strip on the back of the card can hold details about the card such as account number, name and the PIN. To read the data held on the strip, it is swiped through a Magnetic Strip reader. - 13Describe MICR.MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition/Reader. This form of input device reads and inputs characters which have been printed in magnetic ink. Banks use this method for processing cheques because it is very secure.
- 14Describe sensors.Sensors are used to detect physical quantities outside a computer such as temperature, pressure and light.
