  1. 1Experiment, Outcomes, and Sample SpaceAn experiment is a process that, when performed, results in one and only one of many observations. These observations are called the outcomes of the experiment. The collection of all outcomes for an experiment is called a sample space.
  2. 2EventA collection of one or more of the outcomes of an experiment
  3. 3Simple EventAn event that includes one and only one of the (final) outcomes for an experiment is called a simple event and is usually denoted by Ei.
  4. 4Compound EventA compound event is a collection of more than one outcome for an experiment.
  5. 5ProbabilityA numerical measure of the likelihood that a specific event will occur.
  6. 6Equally Likely OutcomesTwo or more outcomes that have the same probability of occurrence are said to be equally likely outcomes.
  7. 7Law of Large NumbersIf an experiment is repeated again and again, the probability of an event obtained from the relative frequency approaches the actual or theoretical probability.
  8. 8Subjective ProbabilitySubjective probability is the probability assigned to an event based on subjective judgment, experience, information, and belief.
  9. 9Marginal ProbabilityMarginal probability is the probability of a single event without consideration of any other event. Marginal probability is also called simple probability.
  10. 10Conditional ProbabilityConditional probability is the probability that an event will occur given that another event has already occurred. If “A” and “B” are two events, then the conditional probability of “A” given “B” is written as P(A|B), which is read as “the probability of A given that B has already occurred."
  11. 11Mutually Exclusive EventsEvents that cannot occur together are said to be mutually exclusive events.
  12. 12Independent EventsTwo events are said to be independent if the occurrence of one does not affect the probability of the occurrence of the other. In other words, “A" and “B" are independent events if either “P(A|B) = P(A)” or if "(P(B)|A) = P(B)"
  13. 13Complementary EventsThe complement of event A , denoted by Ā and read as “ A bar” or “ A complement,” is the event that includes all the outcomes for an experiment that are not in A.
  14. 14Intersection of EventsLet “A" and “B" be two events defined in a sample space. The intersection of “A" and “B" represents the collection of all outcomes that are common to both “A” and “B” and is denoted by “A and B”, “A ∩ B”, or “AB”.
  15. 15Joint ProbabilityThe probability of the intersection of two events is called their joint probability. It is written as “P(A and B)"
  16. 16Union of EventsLet “A" and “B" be two events defined in a sample space. The union of events “A" and “B” is the collection of all outcomes that belong either to “A" or to “B" or to both “A” and “B" and is denoted by “A or B” or “A U B."
  17. 17FactorialsThe symbol “n!" , read as “n factorial,” represents the product of all the integers from "n" to 1. In other words,
    n!=n(n-1)(n-2)(n-3)…3.2.1.
    By definition, 0!=1
  18. 18Combinations NotationCombinations give the number of ways “x" elements can be selected from “n" elements. The notation used to denote the total number of combinations is “nCx” which is read as “the number of combinations of “n" elements selected “x" at a time.”
