  1. 1what are atoms?small particles that make up all the things in the universe
  2. 2what is indirect evidence?evidence that can be only inferred and not proven from direct observations
  3. 3describe the structure of an atomthe atom has a nucleus, which contains neutrons and protons, and is responsible for the majority of the atom's weight, and electrons which circle it in different energy levels/shells.
  4. 4number of electrons is equal to...the number of protons
  5. 5What is the formula which is used to determine the maximum number of electrons a shell can hold?2n^n
  6. 6What is an electron configuration? It is how electrons can be arranged, for example, the electron configuration for an oxygen atom would be 2,6.
  7. 7What does the number of protons determine? It determines the element.
  8. 8Atomic Number = ???Number of Protons
  9. 9What are groups and what do they determine?Groups are the vertical columns in the periodic table. All the atoms in the same group have the same valency and charge but different physical and chemical properties.
  10. 10What is the difference between molecules and lattices?Molecule refer to a group of atoms joined together with chemical bonds whereas lattices refer to large, regular arrangements.
  11. 11What is group 18 on the periodic table and what are some of their characteristics?Group 18 are the noble or inert gases. They have a full valence shell and are extremely stable. Consequently, the exist as single atoms (monatomic) and rarely bond with other atoms.
  12. 12What are the different bonding types? Arrange them from strongest to weakest.Metallic Bonding (2 metals)
    Ionic Bonding (metal and non-metal)
    Covalent Bonding (2 non metals)
    Covalent > Ionic > Metallic
  13. 13What is metallic bonding?Metallic bonding is bonding between metals where the positively charged metal ions are in a sea of electrons.
  14. 14What is ionic bonding?Ionic bonding is when positive and negative ions pull themselves together, building up a three dimensional structure called a lattice.
  15. 15What is covalent bonding?Covalent bonding occurs between non-metallic atoms where electrons are shared in their outer most shell.
  16. 16What are the properties of a metal?Metals are malleable (able to be bent), ductile (able to be stretched), heat and electrical conductor and lustrous.
