- 1OTHELLO-politically controversial and dangerous as it challenges the 17th-century European culture/ norms of what is noble and moral.
-a tragedy of both love and revenge - what happens when soldiers are prepared for war but have no war to occupy them.
-incudes the generic convetions of tragedy -noble hero great of heart/ fatal flaw/ makes a fatal error of judgment/ exploited by a villain who brings about the heros downfall/suffering and death/ to others and the hero/ tragic fall from grace/ epiphany/ death
-the journey from ignorance to knowledge - recognition - which comes too late
-domestic tragedy - marrige which challenges ideas of class/ race/ conformity of women.
the play ultimatley suggests that if social order is to continue the marriage and what it represents MUST END.
- - 2SETTING - VENICEVENICE - represented as a civilised world of order and control - when capitalism thrives
VENICE - @ the time of this play - republic/ controlled by the wealthy merchant classes who gained power importing soldiers to protect their colonial exploits.
VENICE - A1 - SKP establisjed an ordered world in which IAGO's attempts at distruption are easily quelled. - 3SETTING - CYPRUSCYPRUS - main action of the play
-this setting allows SKP to place characters in a world without the boundaries of an established state - VENICE
- CYPRUS is fortified/ isolated setting - builds tension characters can not escape - plays to IAGOS advantage
-NO WAR - due to the sinking of the Turkish fleet - leaving soldiers in their claustrophobic confines to turn on each other without the controlling order of VENICE. - 4TRAGIC HEROOTHELLO - general/high rank
in terms of a tragic status he is not a king or nobleman - much closer to the ORDINARY MAN than most tragic characters.
- he has military power but no status - due to his RACE AND COLOUR - "life and being"
HOWEVER
- he required his
'life and being/from men of royal siege" - he has the required status of a CLASSICAL TRAGIC HERO
- can be seen as foreign royalty/ has a culture which is mysterious/exotic/extraordinary - handkerchief - magic
BUT
he is an outsider to European culture - 5IAGO AS VILLAIN- Calculating/ manipulative/clever /ruthless
"motiveless malignity" -STC
- Often no reasons for his scheme - promotion/ possible cuckoldry
- SKP- does not present his as having a clear plan @ the start -opportunistic villain/ideas gather momentum as he tastes success. - QUOTE
VICE CHARACTER - STC -personification of immoral behaviour - tempers and often agents of the devil.
- plotting the downfall of OTHELLO/ the torture he inflicts - clearly a source of pleasure for him - ENJOYS DESTRUCTION
most of his monstrous activities take place in DARKNESS - connotations of hell/night/secrecy - DEVIL INCARNATE
- can also be seen as the stage MACHIAVEL - torturing/ tormenting those who are good - using their very goodness to "enmesh them"
OTHER INTERPRETATIONS - see him as a VEHICLE OF THE STATE - voicing his views on women/outsiders - his self-interests are the self-interests of those who govern him.
-removing those who TRANSGRESS the unwritten laws of Venice.
HIS ACHIVMENTS OF DESTRUCTION COULD BE SEEN AS WHAT TH STATE DESIRES. - 6VICTIMSMANY VICTIMS
OTHELLO - falls victim to IAGO's manipulation and his own jealous rage.
end of the play - OTHELLO demands the
reason this demi-devil "ensnared" his "soul and body"
DESDEMONA - DEAD - murdered by her husband for a crime she does not commit/ plotted against
-often portrayed on stage as a childlike/ young bride but SKP suggests in A1 she is a woman of spirit and independence.
DEFIES HER FATHER/ MARRIES A BLACK SOLDIER/ TRAVELS WITH HIM TO CYPRUS
where she is manipulated by a series of male figures and final strangled in her bed "put out the light".
EMELIA - DEAD - abuse of women by men
-nearing the event of her death she unleashes a tirade of rebukes on the "dull Moor" who has been so blind/ and also on her husband -denouncing him - cutting the ties of male authority
HOWEVER
her tragic rebellion comes too late to avert the tragic out come.
RODERIGO - bled dry by IAGO stabbed to death in the dark. - 7DEATH"LOOK ON THE TRAGIC LOADING"
completes the tragic pattern - 8RESOLUTIONCATHARSIS - purging of emotions - pity/fear
AUDIENCE - LEFT TO THINK ABOUT OUR EMOTIONS/MORAL/SOCIAL/POLITICAL/PHILOSOPHICAL ISSUES
- world diminished by his passing
- moral forces at work ??
-IAGO lives! - "from this time forth//never speak word"
RESOLUTION IS UNCOMFORTABLE TRAGIC SENSE OF WASTE.
