       • Expensive, easily worked, finishes well

       • Durable, tough, good water resistance due to natural oils, issues with loose knots.

       • Lightweight, easy to work with, can split near knots.
     • Spruce
       • Easy to work with, high stiffness to weight ratio,
   • Manufactured board
     • MDF
       • Cheap, rigid, stable, very absorbent, makes use of waste and low-grade timber, can be veneered..
     • Plywood
       • Very stable in all directions, different thicknesses available, and marine grades available for greater water resistance
     • OSB
       • Very versatile, strong, similar characteristics to plywood

2. Metals

   • Ferrous Metals
     • Low carbon steel (Mild steel)
       • Tough and ductile, oxides if not protected, easily welded
     • High carbon steel
       • Less ductile than mild steel, hard, keeps an edge well, less likely to corrode
     • Cast iron
       • Hard but brittle in thin sections, easily cast into complex shapes, rusts easily
   • Non-ferrous metals
     • Aluminium
       • Lightweight, his strength to weight ratio, malleable, ductile, difficult to weld
     • Copper
       • Ductile, malleable, good heat and electric conductor, easily joined through soldering
