1. Chemical attack, Thermal discomfort, Galvanic effects

2. CHEMICAL ATTACK

   • Constituents of certain restorative materials
   • Acrylic Resin
   • Acids in certain dentine bonding agents
   • Residual acid from acidogenic bacteria left behind

3. THERMAL SHOCK

   • Polymerisation exothermof some rest materials
   • Such as resin comp or VLC glass Polyalkenoate
   • Light curing unit
   • Hot/cold food and drinks
   • Cavity prep produces heat (use water as coolant)

4. GALVANIC EFFECTS

   • rest of dissimilar materials in close proximity
   • with inadequate insulation
   • Sets up an electrolyte cell (electrolytes-saliva)
   • Glavanic pain - kit lat and amalgam/gold opposing amalgam

5. CAVITY PREP

   • Insults the pulp - results in increased inflam cell infiltrate
   • Prep results in 'smear layer' being left
   • occludes the dentinal tubules with: bacteria,collagen,hydroxapatite

6. IDEAL PULP PROTECTION

   • non toxic/irritant, bacteriostatic
   • Gives good coronal seal
   • Thermal/electrical insulator
   • Strength to withstand rest placement
   • Radiopaque
   • compatible with rest materials
   • Obtudant (soothing) to the pulp

7. LINING MATERIALS

   • Calcium Hydroxide
   • Zinc oxide eugenol
   • zinc polycarboxylate
   • zinc phosphate
   • glass polyalkenoates

8. CALCIUM HYDROXIDE

   • high pH - initially irritates the pulp: reactionary dentine laid down
   • High pH - bacteriocidal
   • Thermal/electrical insulator
   • radiopaque and compatible with materials
   • Insufficient strength to condensing
   • not adhesive - no coronal seal

9. ZINC POLYCARBOXYLATE

   • Poly F
   • High molecular weight reduces penetration to tubules
   • only mildly irritant to the pulp
   • Contains fluoride - bacteriostatic
   • Good strength for material placement
   • good insulator
   • Contains zinc - radiopaque

10. ZINC OXIDE AND EUGENOL - KALZINOL

    • Slightly irritant to pulp
    • Bacteriocidal
    • Thermal/electrical insualtor
    • eugenol - obtudant
    • not adhesive - no coronal seal
    • Not compatible with resin comp

11. ZINC PHOSPHATE

    • Low pH - highly irritant to pulp
    • Thermal/electrical insulator
    • radiopaque, bacteriocidal
    • Not obtudant

12. GLASS POLYALKENOATES

    • Vitrebond - mildly irritant to pulp
    • contains fluoride
    • good strength and coronal seal
    • compatible with resin
