GLASS IONOMER

Contains fluoroaluminosilicate (fluoride releasing)
1. Adheres directly to enamel and dentine
2. Cariostatic properties from fluoride release
3. Brittle and poor resistance to abrasion
ADVANTAGES OF USING GI
1. Tooth coloured and translucent
2. Bonds directly to enamel and dentine no adhesion system required
3. Easy to mix and manipulate
4. Fluoride release
5. Can be resin modified to increase strength
DISADVANTAGES OF USING GI
1. Wear resistance and compressive strength less than composite
2. poor aesthetics for ant teeth
3. Finite working time - sets fast
CLINICAL INDICATIONS FOR USING GI
1. Abrasion and erosion cavities
2. Deciduous teeth
  1. Class III + IV
3. Temps
4. ART, root caries, luting cement
CLINICAL INDICATIONS FOR RMGI
1. Lining, base, sandwich technique
CONTRAINDICATIONS OF USING GI
1. Class I, Class II - wear resistance and strength probs
2. Class III, IV unless no alternative
TUNNEL PREPERATIONS
1. Material is syringed into cavity to ensure that the base is filled
2. Then comp on top
3. ADVANTAGES - fluoride, no packing required, direct bonding, depth can be cured
TEMP RESTORATION
1. Strength to withstand some time in the mouth
2. direct bond
3. tooth coloured and easy to use
4. biocampatible
ATRAUMATIC RESTORATIVE TREATMENT (ART)
1. Used when restorative tech are not available or appropriate
2. ie underdeveloped countries or tx of anxious patients
3. Caries is excuvated by hand and GI is placed
ROOTCARIES
1. non load bearing areas

RMGI
1. Lining or used as a base
2. has strength to withstand perm material
3. Can be placed over other medicaments eg calcium hydroxide
material not fully set for 24 hrs - final polishing 24 hrs after
