1. Growing up

   • "Atticus is a gentleman just like me" Jem
   • "If he didnt teach you then who did?" Miss Caroline
   • "I cant help it if Mister Jem's growing up" Calpurnia

2. "Sin to kill a mockingbird"

   • Tom Robinson could be the mockingbird as he gets convicted for doing nothing but helping white people and ends up getting shot because he's black as is being judged.
   • Atticus could be the mockingbird as he is getting threats for defending Tom. He gets the threats as he is helping a black person and in those days you didn't do that.

3. Racism

   • "You arn't really a nigger lover then are you" Scout
   • "I want to know why you bringin' white chillun to nigger church" Calpurnia's friend
   • Plays a big part in the novel because it is shown throughout towards all the black people in the community

4. Great Depression

   • "Nothing to buy and no money to buy it with" Scout narrating
   • "There was no hurry for there was no where to go" Scout narrating

5. Courage

   • "I ain't going, was his steady answer to Atticus's threats, requests" Scout
   • "You just hold your head high and keep those fists down" Atticus
