Responsive Readers

1. Be responsible

   • Readers must be aware of the text and the effects it has on them.
   • Figure out and acknowledge what the text says.
   • Be present in mind and heart when reading.

2. Examine your feelings awakened by the text.

   • The text won't matter unless it touches the reader emotionally or intellectually
   • Notice what's going on inside yourself and feel the emotion or raise the question the text evokes.
   • Pay close attention to what the text says and to what you feel and think as you read.

3. Pay attention

   • Understand your reading.
   • Pay attention to your own responses, thoughts, and reactions.
   • Attend to what's on the page and what's in the mind.

4. Question the text

   • Draw conclusions that are supported by the text.
   • Don't be afraid to question the text.
   • Respect the words on the page as well as your own thoughts and values.

5. Change your mind

   • Talk about the text with others to broaden and enrich insights.
   • Let the text awaken emotions and inspire thoughts.
   • Recognize the distinction between what you bring to the text and what the text brings to you.
