Piaget

  1. Sensori-motor stage (Birth - Two years)

    • Thoughts and behaviour are generally the same. Babies spend their time examining their surrounding and placing objects into schemas in their minds. The baby gradually learns to make some sense of the information coming in through the senses
    • Body Schema - The infant recognises that it exists physically (e.g it can recognise itself in a photograph or mirror)
    • Motor co-ordination - The infant learns to co-ordinate different body parts (e.g. hand to mouth for eating, learning how to move knees and hands for crawling)
    • Object permanence - The infant knows than an object or person still exists even if they cannot be seen. When a newborn baby cannot see that thing or person, they do not exist for them anymore. Towards the end of the 1st year, however, perhaps as early as 8 months, babies will look for hidden objects because they have developed object permanence
  2. Pre-operational stage (Two - Seven years)

    • Animism - Children at this stage treat inanimate objects as if they too are alive just like themselves (e.g. they talk to and about their teddy bear as if it can hear and understand; they tell off a table if they hurt themselves on it).
  3. Concrete operational stage (Seven - Eleven years)

    • Linguistic humour - When children star understanding and enjoying word games and double meanings (e.g. What has an eye and can't see?). Children at this stage will giggle and ask the same people the same question time after time.
    • Seriation - The ability to put things into rank order (e.g. smallest to largest, youngest to oldest).
    • Conservation - When children know that the properties of certain objects remain the same same (are conserved) even if the objects appear to change. Children at the pre-operational stage don't manage to hold on to or conserve what they see if something appears to have changed in some way.
    • They overcome egocentrism, drops animism, and can think baxkwards.
  4. Invariant - The stages of a child development occurs in the same order for all children. Children must pass through them all aat the same age (Fixed

  5. Unviersal - Every single child regardless of culture passes througb the same stages pattern at the same age. (All Children)
