1. Pearl

   • Pearl tries to find out the meaning of the "A" on Hester's Chest
     • She connects it with Dimmesdale holding his chest
   • Currently 7 years old
   • Makes a makeshift "A" with seagrass
     • "Freshly green, instead of scarlet"

2. The Scarlet "A"

   • Pearl doesn't know it's significance / meaning
   • Hester states she wears it because of the gold embroidery / it is pretty
     • The first lie that Hester has told Pearl

3. Hester's Dilenma

   • Wonders if Pearl understands the meaning of the scarlet "A"
   • Notices her daughter is quite perceptive for her young age
   • Hester believes Pearl is too young to know the truth behind the "A"
     • Pearl continues to bug Hester about the significance / meaning of the "A"
     • Pearl may blame Hester for her suffering
