1. Overview

   • When the water potential in equal the solution is in equalibrium
   • The diffusion of water leads to an inrease in pressure
     • Turgor pressure in plants
     • Hydrostatic pressure in animals
   • Osmosis is the net movement of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration down the concentration gradient accross a semi permeable membrane

2. Red Blood Cell

   • Water potential of external solution - higher
     • Net movement of water - enters cell
       • State of cell - plasmolysis
   • Water potential of external solution - equal
     • Net movement of water - no change
       • State of cell - no change
   • Water potential of external solution - lower
     • Net movement of water - leaves cell
       • State of cell - crenation

3. Plant Cell

   • Water potential of external solution - higher
     • Net movement of water - enters cell
       • State of cell - turgid
   • Water potential of external solution - equal
     • Net movement of water - no net movement
       • State of cell - no change
   • Water potential of external solution - lower
     • Net movement of water - leaves cell
       • State of cell - Plasmolysis
