1. A medical condition in which a pregnant woman's cervix begins to dilate and efface before her pregnancy has reached term.

2. Causes

   • History of Conization
   • Uterine abnormalities
   • Exposed to Diethylstilbestrol (DES)
   • Previous D&C
   • Repeated mechanical dilatation

3. Sign and Symptoms

   • Cervical dilation without uterine contractions
   • Heavy feeling in the pelvic or rectal areas
   • Bleeding/Spotting
   • Increased discharges

       • McDonald
       • Abdominal & Hefner
       • Hefner
       • Lash
       • Shirodkar

5. Complications

   • Miscarriage
   • Preterm birth
   • PROM

6. Complications

   • PROM
   • Chorioamnionitis
   • Hemorrhage
   • Uterine and Bladder injury
   • Excessive scar tissue
   • Preterm labor
   • Fetal death

7. Management

   • Bedrest
   • Abstaining from sexual intercourse
