Topologies
- Bus Network
- Advantages: Simple type of network. (Each computer is connected to the computers on either side of it.) Cheap and easy to install. If a computer fails the network continues to work
- Disadvantages: Data communication is relatively slow. If the netwrok cable breaks none of the computers can access the network.
- Star Network
- Advantages: If a cable/computer breaks all computers will still be able to access the file server- More reliable Direct access to the file server-faster
- Disadvantages Network is more expensive to set-up because of the amount of cabling. File server fails all the computers are affected.
- Ring Network
- Advantages: Cheapest network to set-up. Data speed is continuous (no data collision).
- Disadvantages If any of the computers or the network breaks , it can affect the whole network.
- Bus Network
Types of Network
- A file server is a computer on a network that holds files that can be used by other computers on the same network
- A client server network has one computer acting as a file server
- In a peer-to-peer network all computers are of equal importance.
- LAN- Local Area Network: All computer sare in the same building or on the same site. Examles; home, office, school or college. There are diffect links connecting the computers, using cabling or wireless.
- WAN- Wide Area Network: Computers are connected at a geographical distance, computers are anywhere in the world. The connections are made using the telephone network satellites.
Networks
- Advantages: Hardware (peripheral devices) can be shared. Software can be shared. Data can be shared. Networked computers can be centrally controlled by a network manager. Files stored on a server allow for easier back-up.
- Disadvantages: Cost of cabling and setting up can be high. A virus can spread through a network very quickly. Hackers may gain unauthorised access to files saved on a network server. Networks can fail to work properly- causing loss of access to data, hardware and software.
Internets and intranets
- Internets
- The internet is a network of computers across the world using existing telecomunications such as telephone lines and satellite links. It allows the sharing of unlimited data and resources and such activities as messaging, shopping, banking, teaching and advertsing to take place online.
- Intranets
- A network providing similar services to the internet witihn a company or school.
- Extranet- Part of an intranet able to be accessed by authorised members of the public over the internet
- Internets
Network Components
- Switch- A device that filters data packets and forwards them between segments of the network
- Gateway- A system to allow a LAN to connect with a WAN such as the internet
- Bridge-A bridge connects a LAN to another LAN that uses the same protocol
- Router- A device that forwards data packets along a network
- Peripheral- Any hardware plugged into a computer such as a mouse and keyboard
Stand-alone & Networked
- Stand-alone
- Less liable to virus attack and hacking
- No communication with other computers
- Needs its own printer, scanner, software etc
- Networks
- Needs extra proctection, such as firewalls, against online intrusions
- Potential for data sharing
- Can share printers, scanners and software
- Stand-alone
