Atoms, Compounds and Isotopes

1. Atoms

   • Mass number
     • The top number
     • Total number of protons and neutrons
   • Atomic number
     • The bottom number
     • Number of protons

2. Compounds

   • Chemically bonded
   • Formed when atoms of two or more elements are chemically combined together
   • Carbon+oxygen = carbon dioxide
   • It's difficult to separate the original elements out again

3. Isotopes

   • Isotopes have a different atomic forms of the same element which have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
   • They have the same atomic number, but different mass numbers
   • If they had different mass numbers, they would be different atoms altogether
