Safety

Safety

1. Risk Assessment

   • Can be applied to both the design and manufacture of products, and outcome of these risk assesments can determine different aspects such as:
     • Can determine things auch as the physical appearance
     • the materials, components and finishes used
     • the method of manufacture and consumer advice issues with products
   • Example
   • Example
     • British Standards
       • -Part 1: Mechanical and physical properties cover toys to ensure that they have no parts that can stab, trap, mandle or choke.-Part2: Flammability concerns toys such as Wendy's house, fancy dress costumes and soft toys. It limits the materials used to prohibit some of the more flammable ones, and ensure that if the toy does catch fire the child can drop it, or get out of it and get away. -Part3: Migration of certain elements concerns limiting the 'release' of harmful substances such as led from toys

2. Safety legislation & Manufacturing

   • Hazardous to Health Regulations
     • Make the workplace safe and free from risks to health
     • Ensure Machinery is safe and safe working practices are followed
     • Ensure dangerous items and substances are removed and stored safely.
     • Provide sufficient welfare facilities.
     • Provide information, training and supervision as necessary for health and safety
   • How to actually conform to health and safety law
     • Training
       • Normally to be trained in safe operation of equipment they use
       • Taking health and safety courses
     • Guarding of machines
       • Guards range:
         • devices to cover saw blades, such as those on band saws and circular saws
         • electrical cut offs
     • Personal Protective Clothing
       • Overalls, dust masks, safety boots, goggles...
     • Extraction
     • COSHH
       • Materials should be labelled safely used and stored to protect employees
   • Example
     • JCB manucturing
       • Safety Zones
       • Safety Screens
       • Guarding
       • Personal protective Clothing
         • The employees
       • Use of Robotics
       • Job Rotation
