About Tools, Equipment and Workshop Safety

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

This unit sits in the Manufacturing and Making strand of Design and technology. Most of what you will find is about naming tools, knowing what they do and working safely around them. The resources were made by GoConqr users, so styles vary, and that is useful when you want a topic explained a few different ways.

Where to start

Begin with the quiz Tools and equipment. It asks things like which saw is a tenon saw, what the difference is between a hack saw and a junior hack saw, and which saws can cut wood. It shows quickly which tools you already know.

Next, work through the flashcard decks Tools and Workshop Equipment and DT equipment. The first covers items such as the vacuum former, the strip heater and the plunge router. The second covers holding tools such as the G clamp, the one handed G clamp and the spring clamp.

Mind maps for safety and machines

Mind maps make up most of the page. A few good ones to open:

  • woodwork health and safety: not distracting someone using machinery, holding a saw correctly, wearing safety equipment.
  • Lathes and Drills: the lathe parts, such as the chuck, gear levers, cross slide, tailstock, saddle and leadscrew, and what a lathe does.
  • Pinball Machine: hammers and saws, plus safety equipment such as emergency stop signs and safety goggles.
  • Production Techniques: checking a flat surface with a steel rule or straight edge, and datum surfaces.

Using quizzes and maps together

  1. Read a map to see the whole topic.
  2. Take a quiz and note the questions you missed.
  3. Go back to the map or a flashcard deck for those gaps.
  4. Retake the quiz a few days later.

If you want power tool practice, try the quiz Power tools or the band saw and scroll saw quizzes. The deck Machine Tools asks how machine tools differ from hand held ones and how to avoid bad accidents.

Make it yours

Teachers can set a deck or quiz as a starter task. Students can open a map, then build a version in their own words. Choose one resource today and see what you remember.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Try the quiz Tools and equipment. It checks whether you can identify saws and tell similar tools apart, such as a hack saw and a junior hack saw. Once you see which answers you missed, move to the flashcard decks Tools and Workshop Equipment or DT equipment.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover hand tools, machine tools and safety. Examples include woodwork health and safety, Lathes and Drills, Hammers, Drills & Saws and safety labels. Others look at legal responsibilities and production techniques, so you can move from naming tools to working safely with them.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you create your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Which exams and levels do they suit?

Nearly all the resources are aimed at secondary school students. The listed resources mention GCSE Design and Technology and Junior Cert. Some decks are labelled for Year 7, Year 8 or Year 10, so you can pick material that matches your stage.

Is there anything on machines and power tools?

Yes. There is a Power tools quiz and separate quizzes on the band saw, the sliding compound mitre saw and the scroll saw. The Machine Tools flashcards and the Lathes and Drills mind map add more on how machines are used.

What if I cannot find the tool I need?

Try the other tool lists, such as Woodwork Tools, Measuring Tools or Wood marking out tools, as titles differ between contributors. If a gap remains, you can make your own flashcards or mind map and add the tool yourself.
