1. Atoms, Elements + Compounds

   • Everything is made of Atoms. Some materials are made of many types of Atoms, some are made of only one, these are called elements.
   • A compound is a substance that splits into simpler substances. Lots of elements form together into a compound. Water is an example of a compound.

2. Chemical symbols

   • We use chemical symbols because they are universal, they are understood everywhere.
     • Examples are: H= Hydrogen, Ca= Calcium, He= Helium, Cu= Copper, Ti=Titanium, O= Oxygen, Au= Gold, Mg=Magnesium,

3. Element, Compound or Mixture

   • An element consists of one type of atom.
   • A compound is two or more elements that are chemically bonded together.
   • A mixture is two or more elements that are not chemically bonded together.
