what are the three energy systems?

ATP-PC

anaerobic glycolysis

aerobic system

Untitled_4

NOTE that ATP-PC

& AG are part of the

anaerobic sys

food fuels:

carbohydrates:

are the body's prefered fuel source.

foods such as fruit, cereal, bread, pasta and vegetable.

55-60% recommeded intake

converted into glucose after digestion

stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles

glucose in the blood

fats and lipids:

Fats and lipids:

They are the body's main source of fuel at rest and at prolonged

exercises particular after the glycogen store have depleted

Found in foods such as butter margarine, fish poultry

25-30% of the recommend intake

After digestion it is converted into free fatty acids

Stored as adipose tissue at various body sites

proteins:

Usually for the growth and repair of muscles

Used in prolonged exercises

10-15% of recommended

After digestion stored as amino acids

mainly Used for muscle growth and repair

The absorption of these nutrients take place in the small intestine where

the nutrients are then carried away by cells around the body. The excess

nutrient will be stored in the body.

foods as energy sources:

everything we consume is broken down

it is then stored as chemical energy

in order for muscular contractions to occur it must be converted into mechanical energy

ATP=energy!

ATP is needed to keep the cells functioning and is the reason for which muscles contract

ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate

Untitled_4

we all need ATP to function

even jarroyd blair

Untitled_4

THIS is how ATP is broken down

once ATP id broke down it becomes ADP +Pi which is adenosine diphosphate with an inorganic molecule

there is only a limited supply of ATP in the muscles.

sufficient for only short maximal activity such as explosive movements

it is very important for ATP resynthesis for further movement of the muscles

resynthesis of ATP!!

phosphocreatine is used to resynthesize ATP in the muscles

nutrients such as glucose, amino acids and free fatty acids also rejoin ADP+Pi to ATP.

ATP is resynthesised almost as quickly as it is broken down

REFER TO BOOK FOR NUTRIENT RESYNTHESIS OF ATP

fuel sources for physical activity:

glycogen is the body's preferred source of energy

what does it mean by glycolysis:

the breakdown of glycogen, either aerobically or anaerobically

what happens during glycolysis?

the glucose molecule is broken down into two pyruvic acid molecules and energy is released to resynthesis ATP

There are two types of glycolysis what are they?

aerobic gylcolysis there is sufficient oxygen and pyruvic acid the enters the mitochondria to produce more ATP.

During anaerobic glycolysis there is an insufficient amount of oxygen supplied, and the pyruivc acid turns into latic acid and the lactate and hydrogen ions causing the muscle acidity to increase

Untitled_4

which is the preferred fuel source at rest?

the preferred fuel source at rest is fats and lipids

fast are also used in prolonged sub maximal exercise when glycogen stores are depleted.

fats can be used

The contribution of carbohydrates, fats and proteins to energy production

The contribution of carbohydrates, fats and proteins to energy production

carbohydrates

muscle glycogen would be used first then the glycogen store in the liver would be utilized.

for endurance athletes people tend to carb load which basically means that they reduce the amount of training 10 days prior to the comp and eat a lot of carbohydrates

Untitled_4

HEY I CARB LOAD!!!
