Propaganda and Cult of personality

The purpose of propaganda is to make people believe what the government wants them to. It was a way to control the people and secure Stalin's position.How did this work? Stalin's name and picture were everywhere Streets and cities were named after him Poems and plays written about him Newspapers wrote stories of his wonderful achievements and gave him nicknames such as 'the boss' and 'shining sun of humanity' He had photos doctored so it seemed like he was close to Lenin who was admired still Huge parades in Moscow, films, statues and paintings showed how lucky the Soviet people were to have such a great leader People were told Stalin was the centre of all good and wise

Why would Stalin want to be viewed as a god-like figure and achieve this through the cult of personality? He would look like a better leader Increased support and acceptance of his opinions He stands out as the best political leader and secures his position as leader of the USSR

Stalin saw himself as Lenin's disciple and this helped him to create a positive image because Lenin was still viewed as a god in Soviet society, so people would subsequently associate Stalin with being godly

How was it created? Artists, writers and film makers were instructed to produce works about Stalin and his great achievements Ordinary people were told that Stalin was the centre of all that was good and wise
