The Periodic Table first desgined by Mendeleev is arranged in a specific style to suit the increasing atomic mass (which is arranged in periods) and similar properties (which are put in groups)
We call the vertical columns Groups and all of those in the same group share similar properties. This is due to the amount of electrons in their outer shell.
For example: Group 1 will always have only one electron in their outer shell. This is why they share similar characterisitics, as having only one electron will make them highl reactive
So Group 2 will have 2 electrons in their outershell e.t.c.
Group 0 (the Noble gases) however are the anomly as they have a full outershell ( 8 electrons) and as such dont react with other chemicals.
Periods are the horizontal rows. Again their is a pattern to this which makes remebering this easy. For ever period there is a outer shell.
For example: Period 3 will have three outer shells land its electronic configuration will go 2, 8, and whatever group its in.
When working out the electronic configuration remeber the first shell is always 2 then begins filling up in 8's.
Another example is Ca is found on period 4 /group 2. Meaning it has 2 electrons in its outer shell and has four shells. So its electronic configuration is 2,8,8,2.
You can also draw this as a diagram as seen to the right.
