Online Communication

INTRODUCTION

• In the following slides i will define, with some examples when necessary, some of the key terms that are used within online communication
• These will be:
• Online community,
• Network of Friends
• Virtual World
• Netiquette
• Chat
• Chatroom
• Blogs
• Microblog
• Wiki

Online Community

• Certain amounts of people online will join groups, or something called a 'fandom'. These are filled with people that generally have the same interests. A lot of these people will frequently talk about their common interests and develop friendships. Some of these groups can be more popular than others, meaning that there will be more people in the group. The friends that you make can also be called your network of friends.
• 

Virtual World

• 
• A virtual world is an unreal world which is created by the computer. A virtual world does not exist in the real world.
• There are quite a few popular examples of virtual worlds, such as 'World of Warcraft' or 'Club Penguin'
• there are also things like 'Habbo' and 'SecondLife' which are also popular examples of virtual worlds.
• Within these virtual worlds you can talk with people around the world and you can make friends with these people and play the game together.

Netiquette

• There are some rules to make sure that the time you spend online is safe. When these rules are broken all of the other users have the ability to enforce these rules. Usually they will have the ability to block and report you. The word netiquette is a combination of the word net, this comes from the internet, and etiquette, which is the more polite way to treat people. The people that say most of the nasty things are called trolls.

Microblog

• This is a type of blog that limits the amount of characters you can use. For example, on twitter you can only use up to 140 characters (or letters) this is so that a lot of people don't post large paragraphs that take up a lot of room on a screen.
