About Online Services and E-commerce

GoConqr Original

What the resources cover

Most of this page follows the BTEC ICT Unit 1 theme of the online world. You will find material on online services and communication, the components of the internet, and the issues with operating online. A second strand looks at e-commerce: online shopping, online payment methods, online banking, online auctions and online advertising.

The flashcards ask direct questions. One deck asks you to name three types of online advertising, explain pay per click advertising and list disadvantages of using e-mails. Another asks what a VLE stands for.

Where to start

  1. Open the mind map Unit 1 The Online World Revision Mindmap. It lays out Learning Aims A, B and C, so you can see the whole unit at a glance.
  2. Read the notes headed Unit 1: The Online World, which split the unit into email, the worldwide web, data exchange, data storage and possible threats to data.
  3. Move to the slide sets on online communication and online collaborative working.
  4. Look at the e-commerce mind maps, such as Online Shopping: Advantages and Disadvantages, which lists reasons like shopping 24/7, bigger choice and easy price comparison.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a map first, then test yourself. The quiz Online Communication asks you to spot real time communication and name an online business tool. Unit 1 Online World BTEC ICT — Which Statement is True? covers IMAP email and bandwidth, so it suits a later check. Note which questions you miss, then go back to the matching map branch.

For web design and shopping sites, the mind map FACTORS IN PAGE DESIGN OLD NAVY covers ease of use, legible text, simple graphics and ease of purchase. It makes a good partner for the e-commerce flashcards.

Where it fits

This unit sits in the strand ICT in Use: Communication, Business and Education, within Computing and ICT. Almost everything here is aimed at secondary level, so it suits school students, and teachers can use the slides and notes as ready-made starters.

Choose one learning aim, work through a quiz and see how it goes.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the mind map Unit 1 The Online World Revision Mindmap. It sets out Learning Aim A on online services and communication, Learning Aim B on the components of the internet and Learning Aim C on issues with operating online. After that, pick a quiz on the aim you want to test.

What do the e-commerce resources cover?

They include mind maps on online shopping, online banking and alternative online payment methods, flashcard decks on e-commerce topics, notes on cookies and transactional data, and slide sets on online auctions and shopping. Together they cover the pros and cons of buying online and how payments work.

Which exams do these resources suit?

The listed resources mention GCSE ICT, BTEC ICT, BTEC IT and BTEC First ICT. Nearly all of them are at secondary level, so they suit school students working on those courses. Check your own specification, as the resources are written by users.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Can teachers use these in lessons?

Yes. Teachers will find slide sets on online communication, online documents and online collaborative working, plus notes and quizzes. These can work as starters, revision tasks or homework checks. Look through them first to make sure they match your course.

What if I cannot find the topic I need?

Try a related title. Many topics appear under different names, such as e-commerce, Topic 4 or online shopping. If a gap remains, you can build your own mind map, flashcard deck or quiz on the topic and use that for revision.
