Types of children's play

Solitary Play

• 
• Solitary play is when a child plays in one spot and focusing on their activity. The child is alone and removes itself from distractions.
• 2 months - 2 years
• Such as - building blocks

Onlooker play

• 
• Onlooker play is when a child watches another with an activity but does not engage.
• 2 - 3 years
• Such as - watching another child paint.

Parallel play

• 
• Parallel play is when two children play together but don't talk.
• 2 - 3 years
• Such as - one child playing cars while another plays trains while sitting next to eachother.

Associative play

• 
• When a group of children participate in a group activity. They can also share or lend toys or pieces of play equipment.
• 3 years - onwards
• Such as - one child cutting out paper while another sticks.

Co-operative play

• Working and playing together planned just for the purpose of achieving some type of goal.
• 4 years - onwards
• Such as fixing a puzzle or playing a board game.
