Fragen in diesem Quiz (5)

  1. 1AIMS AND CONTEXT
    1. [blank_start]Sexual Selection[blank_end] - [blank_start]Darwin[blank_end]. Any trait that [blank_start]increases[blank_end] reproductive value/success gets selected and passed onto future generations over [blank_start]evolutionary time[blank_end].
    2. [blank_start]Parental Investment[blank_end] -Drives mate selection in humans. It [blank_start]doesn't take a man long[blank_end] to impregnate a woman, however women must invest [blank_start]time and energy[blank_end] for 9 months so may be [blank_start]choosier[blank_end] when selecting a partner. Look for [blank_start]ambition[blank_end], earning potential etc.
    3. [blank_start]Reproductive value/fertility[blank_end] - More likely to affect a [blank_start]males[blank_end] choice as they are fertile for much longer. Fertility peaks at around [blank_start]20[blank_end] for women, suggesting that men prefer younger, [blank_start]physically attractive[blank_end] women as there are better chances of them having their child.
    4. [blank_start]Paternity probability[blank_end] - men will value [blank_start]chastity[blank_end] more than females as a woman can [blank_start]guarantee[blank_end] the baby she gives birth to is her own flesh and blood. A male needs to be certain he is the [blank_start]father[blank_end] to a potential offspring
    5. Aim - to investigate [blank_start]evolutionary explanations[blank_end] for sex differences in human mate preferences in a variety of different [blank_start]cultures[blank_end], specifically:
    a) if women prefer ambition & hard work
    b) if men prefer physical attractiveness & youth
    c) if men value chastity more than females
If sex preferences are innate, we could expect them to be the same across [blank_start]all[blank_end] cultures.

  2. 2CRITICALLY ASSESS - BUSS
Buss: 2 closed questionnaires investigating sex differences in human mate selection. Found [blank_start]women[blank_end] value ambition, industriousness and financial capacity more than males. Males valued age, physical attractiveness and sometimes [blank_start]chastity[blank_end].

    2. Bmen
    3. Cchastity
    4. Dambitiousness
  3. 3ALTERNATIVE EVIDENCE 1 - [blank_start]WAYFORTH & DUNBAR[blank_end]
Analysed [blank_start]900[blank_end] lonely hearts ads. They were sorted into [blank_start]10[blank_end] year age groups ans scored for frequency by which they mentioned PA, sexual fidelity, [blank_start]tolerance of children[blank_end], age requirements, wealth/status. Found more [blank_start]men[blank_end] than women valued youth and PA. Women used PA to described themselves, men reported [blank_start]economic status[blank_end]. SUPPORTS - evolutionary theory. [blank_start]DEVELOPS[blank_end] - people know what other genders look for. However, used a much [blank_start]smaller sample[blank_end] & only studied one culture ([blank_start]ethnocentric[blank_end]). Also open to more subjectivity. However, high in [blank_start]ecological validity[blank_end] as they studied real lonely hearts ads

  4. 4ALTERNATIVE EVIDENCE 2 - [blank_start]LITTLE ET AL[blank_end]
[blank_start]Facial symmetry[blank_end] - indicates fertility. Examined preference for facial symmetry in [blank_start]UK[blank_end] and Hazda. Found both preferred facial symmetry, which was strongest in [blank_start]Hazda[blank_end]. [blank_start]SUPPORTS[blank_end] - facial symmetry is an important factor in [blank_start]male[blank_end] preferences across 2 different cultures. However, a weakness of this study is that it only examined 2 cultures, therefore it is [blank_start]harder to generalise[blank_end] to other cultures. Also lacks [blank_start]ecological validity[blank_end] as the faces they saw were [blank_start]computer[blank_end] images. On the other hand, it identifies a [blank_start]specific characteristic[blank_end] which people are attracted to - Buss failed to do this.

  5. 5ALTERNATIVE EVIDENCE 3 - [blank_start]CHU ET AL[blank_end]
Presented [blank_start]186[blank_end] females with attractive, average and [blank_start]unattractive[blank_end] male faces, paired with income implying [blank_start]high[blank_end], medium or low [blank_start]status[blank_end]. Asked to rate attractiveness for a [blank_start]long-term[blank_end] partner. Found highest ratings were given to attractive males of [blank_start]medium[blank_end] status - who is also less likely to settle down. [blank_start]CONTRADICTS[blank_end] - Buss found females value good financial prospects, which was refuted in this study. However, a small sample was used in comparison to Buss and they were all [blank_start]university students[blank_end] so therefore unrepresentative. It also lacks [blank_start]ecological validity[blank_end] as they were only rating faces.
