Variation Vocab

• Trait: Characteristics determined by genetics.
• Gene: Blueprints/directions for a trait.
• Mutation: Random change or mistake in a gene. Mutation --> changes structure --> changes function. Mutations can be +,- or neutral.

Inheritance Vocab

• Parents Pass on their trait to their offsprings genetically, offsprings generally look like there parents.
• + Mutation = Advantageous trait, More likely to be passed onto offsprings.
• - Mutation = Disadvantageous trait, Less likely to be passed on because organism dies before reproducing.

Selection Vocab

• Some mutations allow organisms to reproduce more than others based on the environment. + Mutation --> makes it easier to survive - Mutation --> Makes it harder to survive. Environment determines if mutation is advantageous or disadvantageous

Time Vocab

• Successful Variations accumulate over many generations advantageous trait becomes more common in a population.
• adaption: Mutated structure that becomes more common in a population (Noun Not Verb).
• Evolution: The change in population over time were one trait (+ Mutation) becomes more common.
