- 1Bitmap graphicGrid of dots = raster graphic.
color of each dot stored as binary number - 2Pixel/resolutioneach pixel reps location in memory.
resolution = fineness, sharpness of screen display or printed piece.
more memory available, more pixels, higher resolution and clearer image
resolution = dimensions of grid forms bitmap
expressed in number of horiz and verti pixels - 3Physical size/image resolutionBitmap does not have physical size.
Depends on density and resolution.
Density is expressed at dots per inch for printer and pixel per inch for monitor - 4Where to find bitmaps?/how to create?digital camera
scanner
web pages
ms paint, ps
freehand sketching, shading, creative effects - 5Image qualitycan be manipulated through compression : uncompressed image is saved under bmp or tiff.
jpg compresses image. analyzes images in 8x8 pizels and selectively reduces details.
higher compression, block more visible. subject and pattern depends. - 6File size/image resoeach pixel in bitmap stored as one or more bits. more pixels= more bits = high file size.
higher reso = more data = better quality
megapixel = millions of pixels
1.9mp = 1600x1200
3.1mp = 2160x1440 - 7Mathsmp = 1 million
8mp = 3266x2450 = 8 million p
to find largest photo quality :
3266/300 = 10.89 inches
2450/300 = 8.17 inches - 8Print size vs resolutionUse of image?
Choose image size and amount of compression
Least possible compression - 9Color depthNumber of colors available for use in an image
Number of bits per pixel
Each bit represent 2 colors
To control depth, must dedicate small amount of memory.
8 bits = 256 2^8 - 10TIFFTagged image file format
appropriate for scanned - 11EPSEncapsulated post script
object oriented format to store graphics
refined form of post script that allo raster and vector program to open for editing - 12JPEGJoint photographic experts group
compressed reduces file size. web graphics. don't save over itself. lossy file format. - 13GIFGraphic interchange format
web graphics, flat color and type. compresses graphics without elimniating detail
lossless - 14PDFPortable document format
cross platform, print even if don't have fonts and software. - 15PICTMac object, handles bitmap and vector well. should be converted to tiff or eps first to use.
