- 1Power supplyThe power supply comes with the case, but this component is mentioned separately since there are various types of power supplies. The one you should get depends on the requirements of your system. This will be discussed in more detail later
- 2MotherboardThis is where the core components of your computer reside which are listed below. Also the support cards for video, sound, networking and more are mounted into this board.
- 3HardwareA generic term used to describe any component of a computer system with a physical presence and which can, therefore, been seen and touched.
- 4CPUThe central processing unit (CPU) is the brain of your computer. It handles all the instructions you give your computer, and the faster it does this, the better. Learn about how a CPU processes instructions and how computer engineers are continuously coming up with ways to make it go faster.
- 5Graphics CardA computer's microprocessor is usually busy with other work, so the graphics card handles this. The card has a chip called a Graphics Processor Unit, a microprocessor specialized for video calculations. The GPU lets the computer's main processor do its job, allowing the computer to run at full speed.
- 6ROMRead-only memory is a type of non-volatile memory used in computers and other electronic devices. Data stored in ROM can only be modified slowly, with difficulty, or not at all, so it is mainly used to store firmware or application software in plug-in cartridges.
- 7RAMRandom-access memory is a form of computer data storage. A random-access memory device allows data items to be accessed in almost the same amount of time irrespective of the physical location of data inside the memory. In contrast, with other direct-access data storage media such as hard disks, CD-RWs, DVD-RWs and the older drum memory, the time required to read and write data items varies significantly depending on their physical locations on the recording medium, due to mechanical limitations such as media rotation speeds and arm movement.
- 8SOUND CARA sound card is an internal computer expansion card that facilitates economical input and output of audio signals to and from a computer under control of computer programs. The term sound card is also applied to external audio interfaces that use software to generate sound, as opposed to using hardware inside the PC. Typical uses of sound cards include providing the audio component for multimedia applications such as music composition, editing video or audio, presentation, education and entertainment and video projection.
- 9CPU FANA computer fan is any fan inside, or attached to, a computer case used for active cooling, and may refer to fans that draw cooler air into the case from the outside, expel warm air from inside, or move air across a heat sink to cool a particular component. Generally these are found in axial and sometimes centrifugal forms. The former is sometimes called a "muffin" fan, while the latter may be called a "biscuit blower" in some product literature.
