1 What is a textile component?
1.1 Extras added to fabric used to make textile item. Without them - very difficult to make them.
1.2 Pre-manufactured/home-made e.g. shoulder pads or covered buttons.
1.3 Role is to aid construction (threads), allow for opening + closing (zip), add strength (interfacing), embellish (beads), insulate (wadding), add shape (shoulder pads) + improve quality of product.
1.4 When choosing one, designer needs to consider care, cost, quality, aesthetic appeal, safety issues + end use.
2 Components
2.1 Sewing Threads
2.1.1 Function: Hold fabric pieces together, add fastenings + decoration.
2.1.2 E.g. - cotton, polyester, metallic + silk threads.
2.2 Beads + Sequins
2.2.1 Decorate with colour, texture, catch light + add weight to product.
2.2.2 Plastic, wood + diamante.
2.3 Ribbon, bindings, cords + braids
2.3.1 Add decorative edgings or features. Used as ties + fastenings.
2.3.2 Fabric strips or different weights, patterns, widths + fires.
2.4 Interfacings
2.4.1 Aid sewing, add strength, give shape + structure or used as bonding glue.
2.4.2 Non-woven sew/iron-on (fusible) fabric or paper backed web-bonding (Bondaweb).
2.5 Pre-manufactured motifs
2.5.1 Speed up decorative processes + add feature.
2.5.2 School + team badges, children's animal motifs.
