When we report someone's words, we can do it in two ways: Direct Speech & Reported Speech.

Direct Speech

Reported Speech

e.g.

Diane said, "I am happy today".

e.g.

Diane said that she was happy that day.

When we change Direct Speech to Reported Speech, we must often change the tense.

e.g.

Tomorrow => The next day

Next (week) => The following (week)

Yesterday => The day before

Last (week) => The (week) before

When changing Direct Speech to Reported Speech, we often need to change the time.
