Estimating and Approximates

Estimating is a good way of checking your answer. It is useful when shopping to estimate the cost of your purchases.

When estimating...

Round the numbers to easy numbers, usually ones with 1 or 2 significant figures.

Use the symbol this means 'approximately equal to'

When multiplying and dividing, don't approximate a number zero, use 0.1, 0.01 e.t.c

Example:

£1.49 + £0.49 + £1.09

£1.50 + £0.50 + £1.00 = £3.00

However, when adding or subtracting, very small numbers can be approximated to zero.
