Cards in this deck (10)

  1. 1What are the 4 defence options of Lancashire county councilHold the line
    Retreat the line
    Do nothing but monitor
    Advance the line
  2. 2What is the difference in retreat the line and hold the line?Retreat the line = manage the processes that make the coastline retreat
Hold the line = retain the coastline by maintaining current defences building new ones if the old are not sufficient
  3. 3What are the defences a result ofComprehensive improvement scheme of existing structures
    7 phase programme = £28million
  4. 4How large is the morcombe coast line8.5km
  5. 5State strategy one and how it helps to maintain the coast line. State some social, env and eco impactsRock armour to enhance the existing sea wall - from locally sourced limestone 1km easy of town centre
0.77-7 times total of 436000 tonnes installed
Protect the coast line but reducing the erosive power of the waves. They may not be fully fixed so when the rock they absorb more energy.
Env = can be unattractive and deter organisms
Social = visual pollution; of mesh wire cage
Eco = usually expensive to source boulders hut they are locally sourced which may reduce cost
  6. 6State strategy 2Breakwaters and groynes.
Trap sediment to build up the beach. Beaches absorb wave energy this reduce the erosive power of the waves protecting the coast line
Social = protect coast = protects against flooding = protection of housing
Env = creating of small bays
    Eco= income
From tourism; beach and attractions are maintained
  7. 7State strangely 3 and how is helps to protect the coast lineRecurve walls = along the promenade in 2015 wall was repaired = cheaper than building a new one but shows that they can be exploited by HA thus maintenance cost = high + shows that the coast line is of value if they are going to spend a lot of money to maintain
Env = unsightly - pollution from transport of material
Eco = jobs, protects coast line from flooding and erosion - protects businesses
  8. 8What is strategy 4 and how does it help500 cages 2x1x1 filled with limestone - social use of local limestone to maintain the uniqueness of the coast line - place of scientific interest = aids sustainable development of the coast line
Could argue this is effective as it uses local resources - maintains uniqueness and reduced pollution from transportation; sourced closer to coast.
  9. 9What is strategy 5Concrete revetments and sea wall - located on west heysham head - to port power station.
  10. 10How many tonnes of sand did the breakwaters collate and what’s the purpose of the breakwaters89000 of sand material - for beach nourishment - they installed these to collect material rather than taking it from another costa line = more sustainable; doesn’t deplete material on another coast line but could reduce the amount of sediment by long shore drift over a long period of time.
