3. Deskriptive Research: Data collection method & sample

Cards in this deck (16)

  1. 16-Step procedure for drawing a sample1. Define the target population.
    2. Identify the sampling frame.
    3. Select a sampling procedure.
    4. Determine the sample size.
    5. Select the sample elements.
    6. Collect the data from the designated elements.
  2. 2Population• A population is the group of units about which to make judgments.
    • Important and not trivial decision at the very beginning of the research process
    - e. g. B2B vs. B2C, user vs. buyer.
    • Can be defined very broadly or very narrowly
    - e. g. people living in Germany vs. students of economics
  3. 3Sample• Subset of selected cases from the population
    • Since a census is very expensive, sampling procedures are often used.
    sample must be representative
-> The characteristics of the sample closely match those of the population.
-> It is possible to draw conclusions from the sample to the population.
  4. 4Sample frame• List of elements from which the sample is drawn
    - e. g. a telephone book.
    • Sample frame should mirror the target population as much as possible.
  5. 5Sampling procedures- Probability sampling
    - Non-probability sampling
  6. 6Sampling procedures Probability sampling- Simple random sampling
    - Stratified sampling
    - Cluster sampling
=> Each population element has a known, non-zero chance of being included in the sample -> representative (statistical methods can be applied)
  7. 7Sampling procedures Non-probability sampling- Judgmental sampling
    - Quota sampling
    - Other types of convenience sampling
=> Involves personal judgement of the researcher (no way of insuring representative samples)
  8. 8Probability sampling Simple random sampling (SRS)Probability sampling Simple random sampling (SRS)
  9. 9Probability sampling Stratified samplingProbability sampling Stratified sampling
  10. 10Probability sampling Cluster samplingProbability sampling Cluster sampling
  11. 11Non- Probability sampling Judgmental samplingNon- Probability sampling Judgmental sampling
  12. 12Non- Probability sampling Quota SamplingNon- Probability sampling Quota Sampling
  13. 13Non- Probability sampling Other types of convenience samplingNon- Probability sampling Other types of convenience sampling
  14. 14Central Limit TheoremIf your sample size is large enough (n>30), you can assume a normal distribution for the sample mean and you can draw conclusions from the sample over the population
  15. 15confidence Intervall with sigmacheck Paper
  16. 16confidence interval with scheck paper
