IP compression

Simon Perez Informatik English 4 cards

Cards in this deck (4)

  1. 1What is IP compression? The IP Payload Compression protocol (IPComp) reduces the size of IP datagrams by compressing the datagrams to increase the communication performance between two partners. The intent is to increase overall communication performance when the communication is over slow or congested links.
  2. 2For which kind of traffic is compression effective?Compression for the IP header is mostly effective when a lot of small packets have to be sent since it reduces the impact of the header payload (20bytes)
  3. 3For which kind of traffic is compression not effective?- Media for example Video and Audio
    - When the IP traffic uses encryption or higher layer compression (e.g. ZIP files, IPCOMP, or multimedia CODECs)
    - The use of IPSEC encryption (ESP with encrypted payload) is also an obstacle for compression. This prevents use of VJHC, and forces ROHC to only compress the outer (unencrypted) packet headers. Bulk compression will also fail to compress an encrypted payload. One mitigation, is to use a bulk compression algorithm prior to applying the IPSEC encryption.
  4. 4Why doesn't TCP/IP always compress all traffic?Because it would take a lot of processing power and it's not worth to compress every type of data
Layer 2 payload compression applies the selected compression algorithm to the entire frame payload, which includes the TCP/IP headers. It is designed to be used on links that operate at speeds from 56 k to 1.544 M. It is useful on all types of traffic, as long as the traffic has not been previously compressed by a higher-layer application.
