- 1SOFTWARE Software is often divided into two categories. Systems software includes the operating system and all the utilities that enable the computer to function. Applications software includes programs that do real work for users.Nearly all software utilizes hardware to operate properly. A video game, which is software, uses the computer processor (CPU), memory (RAM), and video card, all of which is hardware, to run. Word processing software uses the computer processor, memory, and hard drive to create and save documents.

The OS controls the overall operation of the computer such as running user applications, managing devices, protecting programs from interfering with each other.The role of the OS as the controller is to provide a link between the user and the computer
- 3Utility software Utility software is software that carries out specific tasks designed to keep your system running smoothly. There are lots of different types of utility software, which are used for a variety of different systemsFor example, garages run utility software on our cars to read
out problems which occur between services. On my mobile phone I can check the status of
the currently open apps and how much storage they take up.
Some utility programs help keep your computer free from unwanted software, such as
viruses, while others add functionality that allow you to customize your desktop and user
interface, or keep your data safe. - 4Anti-virus software scans for malicious files which could cause harm, and they should remove them from your computer.You need to update this regularly, otherwise it may not be able to
detect the latest viruses or security threats. - 5A firewall is a program that can prevent unwanted access into or out of your computer from a network.For example, at school you may not be able to access websites such as Facebook
or Twitter as these might be filtered out by the firewall. - 6Spyware detection searches for and removes malicious software which can do things like display irritating advertising messages or collect your personal data. Sometimes spyware can change settings on your computer without your knowledge.You may have experienced
a form of spyware called browser high jacking, where your homepage gets changed to
something else without your permission. - 7System clean up tools search for, and remove files which are no longer needed, like temporary internet files, installation files or files in the recycle bin, etc. Lastly, the disc defragmenter tool is generally used for magnetic hard drives. This is used to rearrange your files on a storage device to optimise file storage.To maintain your
PC, you should regularly use a variety of different software utilities.
