Flashcards
Separating mixtures

Cards in this deck (10)
- 1SievingMethod in which two or more components of different sizes are separated from a mixture on the basis of the difference in their sizes.

- 2EvaporationUsed to separate out homogeneous mixtures where there is one or more dissolved salts. The method drives off the liquid components from the solid components. The process typically involves heating the mixture until no more liquid remains.

- 3DistillationTo separate a mixture of liquids, the liquid can be heated to force components, which have different boiling points, into the gas phase. The gas is then condensed back into liquid form and collected. It is based on differences in the conditions required to change the phase of components of the mixture.

- 4DecantationProcess to separate mixtures by removing a liquid layer that is free of a precipitate, or the solids deposited from a solution. The purpose may be to obtain a decant (liquid free from particulates) or to recover the precipitate.

- 5CrystallizationProcess through which the atoms/molecules of a substance arrange themselves in a well-defined three-dimensional lattice and, consequently, minimize the overall energy of the system. When a substance is subjected to crystallization, its atoms or molecules bind together through well-defined angles.

- 6FiltrationMethod for separating an insoluble solid from a liquid with a filter that has a complex structure through which only the fluid can pass.

- 7MagnetismUsed to separate components of mixtures by using magnets to attract magnetic materials. The process detaches non-magnetic material with those who are magnetic.

- 8Paper ChromatographyMethod of separating dissolved chemical substances by their different migration rates across the sheets of paper. Uses paper sheets or strips as the adsorbent being the stationary phase through which a solution is made to pass

- 9CentrifugingTechnique used for the separation of particles from a solution according to their size, shape, density, viscosity of the medium and rotor speed. The particles are suspended in a liquid medium and placed in a centrifuge tube. The tube is then placed in a rotor and spun at a define speed.
