Experimentation process

dcardosods English 14 cards

Cards in this deck (14)

  1. 1HypothesisA suggested explanation of a phenomenon. Must be falsifiable. Should be specific, which makes it easier to test.
  2. 2Independent variablesVariable that are manipulated by experimenter.
  3. 3Dependent variablesVariable that are measured.
  4. 4Variables relationshipManipulating independent variables is assumed to affect dependent variables results.
  5. 5Null hypothesisWhen there is no relationship between manipulating independent variables and the result of dependent variables. When testing hypothesis, we are seeking to disproof it.
  6. 6Control conditionNo experimental manipulations performed.
  7. 7Experimental conditionExperimental variable(s) are manipulated.
  8. 8ValidityWhat we say is being measured, is really what is being measured?
  9. 9ReliabilityRunning the experiment several times, do we get the same results every time?
  10. 10ConfoundsAre there uncontrollable variables that might be influencing the results?
  11. 11Subject poolShould represent the intended user population. Should not be biased.
  12. 12Between-subjectsEach subject experience only one condition. Needs more subjects. Do not suffer form "learn effect".
  13. 13Within-subjectsEvery subject experiences every condition. Need fewer subjects. Order of conditions should be counterbalanced to minimize learning effects.
  14. 14Subjects influence on resultsMore subjects increase confidence of findings. Larger effects need less subjects to make it statically relevant. Smaller effects require subjects.
