Chapter 9 Related Cutting Processes
Cards in this deck (20)
- 1abrasivesAbrasives are substances used to smooth out or machine (to mold or finish by machinery) other softer materials through extensive rubbing. They work by scratching away the surface of materials in order to rid it of unwanted roughness or substances. Common examples include, pumice, sandpaper, emery, and sand.
- 2air carbon arc cuttingAir carbon arc cutting is a process of removing metal by means of heat generated from a carbon arc. This process employs a carbon/graphite electrode, compressed air, and a standard power source
- 3carbon electrodeA nonfiller-metal electrode consisting of carbon or a graphite rod; sometimes contains copper powder for increased electrical conductivity; used in carbon arc welding.
- 4cutting gas assistThe assist gas is the physical force that pushes the melted material out of the cut zone. The most commonly used assist gases for laser processing are oxygen, nitrogen, mixed gas, and high pressure air systems. There are other assist gases such as Argon but they are not as commonly used.
- 5DelaminationDelamination is the total separation of the material, usually at or near the center and edge of the material. These inclusions also may cause what welders refer to as “blowouts” as the weld crosses the inclusion.
- 6exothermic gasesExothermic gas or exo gas is used for the thermal treatment of metals as a protective gas. It is the cheapest shielding gas available and can be generated in an exothermic gas generator by burning natural gas, consisting mainly of methane or other hydrocarbons with some lack of oxygen.
- 7Gas LaserProtect the weld metal from reacting with the ambient environment, (e.g. oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen), ... Prevent or minimize formation of a plasma, or cloud of ionized gas, that can form above the weld.
- 8gougingGouging is the term to define a type of corrosion which occurs on a metallic surface in which a hole, groove or indentation is created.
- 9graphitenon-consumable carbon (graphite) electrode and the work-piece. ... At this temperature the separate metals form a bond and become welded together.
- 10laser beam cutsLaser cutting is mainly a thermal process in which a focused laser beam is used to melt material in a localised area.
- 11laser beam drillingLaser drilling involves a stationary laser beam that uses its high power density to melt or vaporize material from the workpiece. In principle, laser drilling is governed by an energy balance (Fig.
- 12laser beam weldsLaser beam welding (LBW) is a welding technique used to join pieces of metal or thermoplastics through the use of a laser. The beam provides a concentrated heat source, allowing for narrow, deep welds and high welding rates.
- 13monochromaticRefers to light of a single wavelength and therefore a single color.
- 14oxygen lance cuttingOxygen lancing is a cutting process which uses oxygen supplied through a consumable steel pipe to pierce holes in metallic and mineral workpieces. ... A fuel gas is not required for the process itself, it may, however, be used in a welding torch to heat the cutting end of the lance to ignition temperature.
- 15solid state lasersSolid-state lasers are lasers based on solid-state gain media such as crystals or glasses doped with rare earth or transition metal ions, or semiconductor lasers. (Although semiconductor lasers are of course also solid-state devices, they are often not included in the term solid-state lasers.)
- 16sychronized waveformsynchronized waveforms is tracking mode. Tracking mode is a simple way to make both outputs identical. To set up tracking mode, you first choose your desired waveform. In this case, we'll use the same square wave with 3 kHz frequency and 100 mV on Channel 1.
- 17washingWashing the weld is the final touch to an attractive weld. Chip away slag from the surface of the weld by chipping the area with a chipping hammer. This will effectively remove the most noticeable imperfections on the weld and provide a much smoother surface.
- 18water jet cuttingWaterjet cutting
Waterjet metal cutting will either use a high pressure jet of water or a combination of water and an abrasive substance, typically granite, to cut a wide variety of materials. Water jets are used to cut soft materials like wood while an abrasive material is added when dealing with tough metals. - 19weld removalBecause there are different types of welding, there are different requirements to undo a weld. Typically, you can remove welding through plasma cutting, torch cutting, grinding or circular saws, drills, or oxy-acetylene torches.
- 20YAG laserYAG is an acronym for yttrium, aluminum, and garnet. Whereas CO2 laser welding is a typical form of gas laser welding, YAG laser welding is a typical form of solid-state laser welding. A flash lamp is used for excitation, enabling laser oscillation at short wavelengths.
