Cards in this deck (20)

  1. 1REQUIRED PRACTICAL 1: SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITYREQUIRED PRACTICAL 1: SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY
  2. 2REQUIRED PRACTICAL 1: SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY ErrorsThe Joulemeter measures the electrical energy supplied to the heater. Not all of this energy will be transferred as thermal energy to the block – some will be lost to the atmosphere.
Heat may be lost form the block to the surroundings during the experiment, this can be improved by insulating the block.
Random error in reading the thermometer or balance
  3. 3REQUIRED PRACTICAL 2 : INSULATIONREQUIRED PRACTICAL 2 : INSULATION
  4. 4REQUIRED PRACTICAL 2 : INSULATION Potential ErrorsDifferent starting temperatures of water can lead to different rates of heat loss each time
Heat can be lost through the top/bottom of the container
Random error can occur when reading the thermometer
  5. 5REQUIRED PRACTICAL 3: Resistance of a WireREQUIRED PRACTICAL 3: Resistance of a Wire
  6. 6REQUIRED PRACTICAL 3: Resistance of a Wire Causes of errors1. Inaccurate measurement of wire – the crocodile clips used to connect the wire in the circuit are a few mm wide and this could lead to the length of wire conducting electricity being slightly shorter than intended. This could be improved by using thinner contacts.
    2. Temperature – it is difficult to control the temperature of the wire and, as the investigation takes place, it is likely to heat up, which affects the resistance of the wire. This could be improved by letting the wire cool down to room temperature in between each measurement.
  7. 7REQUIRED PRACTICAL 4: Investigate the I-V characteristics of electrical components. a. Resistor Method & VariablesREQUIRED PRACTICAL 4: Investigate the I-V characteristics of electrical components. a. Resistor Method & Variables
  8. 8REQUIRED PRACTICAL 4: Investigate the I-V characteristics of electrical components. ALL Improving precisionUse the same component for each repeat. Do not just use the same value of component as they may be slightly different from one another.
Use a low current and turn the circuit off between readings. This prevents the wires and components increasing in temperature which would increase resistance and affect future readings including repeat readings.
