Electric fields

Jio Jenassi Physics A-Level English 23 cards

Cards in this deck (23)

  1. 1What is an electric field?•A region in space where an electrostatic force is exerted on a charged particle.
  2. 2What is the range of an electric field?•It has an infinite range
  3. 3What is a potential gradient?•Another word for electric field strength
  4. 4What are the three cases of the behavior of a charged particle within a uniform electric field?1) A charged particle which is initially at rest.
    2) A charged particle entering the field with a direction parallel to that of the field.
    3) A charge particle entering the field perpendicularly to the direction of the field.
  5. 5What occurs to the charged particle in case 1?•When a negatively charged particle is placed just to the negative electrode, a resultant force is exerted on the particle.
•The resultant force is denoted by EQ.
•Consequently, the particle has kinetic energy and acceleration.
  6. 6What occurs to the charged particle in case 2?•Similar to case 1, a resultant force is exerted.
•Therefore, the particle has KE and acceleration.
  7. 7What occurs to the charged particle in case 3?•Has a resultant force towards the opposite charged electrode.
    •The particle undergoes parabolic motion.
•Consequently, it has both a vertical component and a horizontal component.
  8. 8In case 3, the particle have a horizontal acceleration?•No, because the resultant force is not exerted at a right angle.
•Therefore, the horizontal velocity of the particle is constant throughout.
  9. 9What is significant about the length of the horizontal electrode?•The length of the horizontal electrode is equal to the horizontal displacement.
  10. 10If the particle leaves the field, what is the direction of the particle?•It has a tangential direction to that of the parabolic path.
•Consequently, the particle moves in a straight path.
  11. 11What is Coulomb's law?•The electric force between two point charges is directly proportional to the product of their charge.
•The electric force is inversely proportional to the square of the distances between the centers.
  12. 12Explain coulombs constant.•It is a constant(k) given for a particular medium.
•Different mediums have different k values.
•This is because the constant depends on permittivity.
  13. 13What is permittivity?•It describes how much ELECTRIC FLUX is generated per unit charge in that medium.
•It relates to the material's ability to transmit an electric field.
  14. 14How can Coulomb's Law be investigated?•Through the relationship between force and distance
•Through the relationship between force and charge.
  15. 15What is an electric equipotential?•Lines which are perpendicular to the electric field.
•The lines join points on in an electric field with the same voltage.
•At any given point on an equipotential the voltage is the same.
  16. 16In three dimensions, what to the equipotentials form?•Equipotential surfaces.
  17. 17Why does the movement along an equipotential not require any work?•Such movement is always perpendicular to the field.
  18. 18What is the purpose of an equipotential?•The lines illustrate the scaling of voltage in an electric field between point charges.
  19. 19If the electric field is uniform, what can be said about the electric field strength at any point?•It is the same.
  20. 20What is electric field strength?•An electrostatic force exerted on a positively charged particle of 1C.
  21. 21What can be said about the electric field around a charged particle?•it is non-uniform.
•It gets weaker as the distance increases.
  22. 22What can be said about the equipotentials in a uniform electric field?•They are equally spaced and parallel.
  23. 23Between consecutive equipotentials, what is significant about the equipotential?•The equipotential is the same.
