Flashcards
Conversion
Cards in this deck (11)
- 1- A conversion experience is a change to a religious way of life as a result of some experience of divine truth, whether directly or indirectly.- A transformative experience.
- Religion often becomes the center of one's life and replaces previously held priorities.
- May involve realization of past failings and radical change in one's lifestyle. - 2William James- some will never be converted because of narrow-mindedness or cynicism.
- as with all religious experience, its truth was to bel found in the results. - 3- Many people who receive experiences are convinced to change through their experience of God, often through healing.- sometimes in other experiences that would have been difficult to explain, if not impossible, to regard as coincidences.
- 4There are alternative explanations for conversion experiences.- Often happen after great traumas - desperate attempt to reach rationality.
- Beyond verification.
- Can have psychological explanations. - 5Freud- People who have these experiences often had difficult upbringings. Vulnerable people who have not been given love and affection create an object which will always love and look after them.
- 6- Most corporate experiences may seem more impressive as there are a number of people having the experience. - All other experiences are private and impossible to verify.- Classed as a conspiracy - attempt to prove a religious doctrine.
- Could be explained by group hysteria or mob mentality.
- Shared desire to have a particular experience multiplied by a large crowd. - 7Do shared experiences carry more authority??
- 8St Pauls conversion - (Acts:9:4-8) (Acts 22:6-10)- He fell to the ground and was told by Jesus (Whom he was persecuting) that he had to go into the town.
• He saw Jesus after a flash of light from 'heaven' - converted him as Jesus was seen as his saviour.
• He was dehydrated and or dying. - 9Toronto blessings -- Pastor Randy Clark - Toronto airport.
- People began to laugh, cry, leap, dance.
- Seen by some as a result of the holy spirit.
- Afterwards many have become zealous and spread activities to other places. - 10Edwin Starbuck -- Drew parallels with the normal process of finding our identity in adolescence.
- Most conversions happen 15-24.
- Non-religious adolescents appear to go through similar stages of anxiety and depression before finding 'happy relief' and a sense of identity. - 11Counter argument;the passivity element. Believers speak of a sense that someone or something is acting upon them.
