- 1Hello. Today I will be exploring how Shakespeare presents lady Macbeth in act 5 scene 1 in the play Macbeth. In this scene a doctor and a nurse observe Lady Macbeth sleepwalking. The guilt of Lady Macbeth is evident during this scene as she reveals her true colors whilst unaware of her surroundings. Things are slipping out of hand for Lady Macbeth; this is most evident in her figurative yet fragmented language, as she talks about the murder of Duncan. Throughout the scene Lady Macbeth is revealing her past- her lies. She shows what has been hiding behind the mask all this time all in one night; we know she is not pretending as she is sleeping. Lady Macbeth is filled with guilt. The gentlewoman serving Lady Macbeth feels coinciding sympathy and a sense of bitterness to such a heinous path Lady Macbeth and Macbeth chose to achieve damned success.
- 2In act 5, scene 1, Lady Macbeth is presented to have an obsession about her feeling of having blood in her hands. ‘All the perfumes of Arabia could not sweeten this little hand’ this is a big contrast to the start of the play where she says ‘a little water clears us of this deed’. We can see the deplorable difference between lady Macbeth’s character at the start and at the end. This symbolises expressions of her continuous mental agony and sense of guilt.
