Actue Phase Proteins

Juri De Luca Core Concepts of immunology English 12 cards

Cards in this deck (12)

  1. 1Acute phase Proteins?-Important in innate defence against microbes
-limiting tissue damage caused by microbial infections, malignancies and other diseases.
    -Also important in tissue repair
-Produced in the liver can be either produced de novo or in the case fibrogen is in low levels and increases during infections.
  2. 2What it includes?-These molecuels include , C reactive protein, complement components, opsonic proteins such as MBL, metal binding proteins m and protease inhibitors.
  3. 3The major APPs?-These are the C reactive protein and the Serum amyloid protein A which have similar structures and are termed to be pentraxins because of there pentagonal associated if their subunits.
  4. 4C-RP major?-It reacts with the C-protein of pneumococcus, and is composed of 5 identical polypeptides associated by non covalent interactions.
  5. 5MBL-MBL binds on the residues of mannose on glycoproteins and glycolipids expressed by microbes in a form different from that of mammalian cells.
-MBL is a soluble pattern recognition receptor that binds to pathogen associated molecular patterns.
  6. 6Where are APP's produced?-They are produced by hepatocytes in response to cytokines IL-1,IL-6 , TNF-a and IFN-y released by macrophages and NK cells.
-IL-6 important in enhancing the production of APP'S
  7. 7Functions-Maximise activation of the complement system
    -Opsonisation of invading microbes
-And to limit the tissue damage caused by microbes
  8. 8CRP relation-CRP binds to a wide variety of microbes and on binding activates the complement system through alternative pathway causing C3b deposition on the microbe
  9. 9MBL-The binding of MBL to microbes also starts the complement activation and opsonisation mediated by C3b
  10. 10Metal binding proteins-Inhibt microbial growth
  11. 11Protease Inhibitors-limit tissue damage by neutralising lysosomal enzymes released by phagocytes
  12. 12CRP and SAA-bind to DNA and other nuclear material from cells , helping in there clearance from the host.
-Quantitation of CRP in the serum of patients with inflammatory diseases is used to asses the inflammatory activity of the disease.
-The higher the level of CRP the higher the activity of the disease.
