Question Answer
With diffraction gratings, we refer to fringes as.... Maxima
What is the difference between the patterns produced by diffraction grating and the patterns produced by a double slit? The maxima are much sharper (actual pattern is same)
The slit separation on diffraction gratings compared to double slits is usually much.... Smaller , therefore maxima separation is much larger
How would we calculate the slit separation in metres (symbol d) Lets use the value of 300 lines per mm Multiply this by 1000 to get in metres Do 1/answer for slit seperation (300mm = 300000m , 1/300000 = 3.3x10^-6m)
Diffraction grating formula : dsinθ = nλ (d = slit separation) (θ = angle between maximum and n=0 line) (n = order of maximum) (λ = wavelegth)
